China’s Refining Business: Status and Strategies

To keep abreast with State macro-control initiatives, the refining industry in China shall capitalize on the rising market demand for refining products. Given the trend toward the supply of poor-grade and heavy crude oil, the Chinese refineries should focus in technological innovation and live up to its commitment to environmental protection and safety, to move toward safe environment-friendly and energy-efficient development and make greater strides in refining. PetroChina accelerates oil products upgrading and reduces costs

On November 12, a 400,000 t/y FCC gasoline hydrodesulphurisation unit of Yumen Refining and Petrochemical Complex, PetroChina started up. It produced motor gasoline under State-5 Gasoline Standard, and is also capable of producing long term State-5 gasoline. Up till now, gasoline hydrodesulphurisation units of Qingyang Petrochemical, Ningxia Petrochemical, Haerbin Petrochemical, Daqing Refining and Petrochemical, Daqing Petrochemical and etc, under PetroChina, has all been producing State-4 and 5 motor gasoline. By January 2014, refineries belonging to PetroChina will all produce State-4 motor gasoline. Read More ›

The application of DSO technology accelerate domestic State-5 gasoline upgrading

A selective hydrodesulphurisation technology of catalytic gasoline (DSO technology) developed by Petrochemical Research Institute, PetroChina has been successfully employed in a 900,000 t/y FCC gasoline hydrodesulphurisation unit in Haerbin Petrochemical Company to reduce the sulphur content of gasoline from 108 mg/kg to less than 7.5 mg/kg, meeting State-5 Motor Gasoline Standard. It is the first case of PetroChina adopting self-developed DOS short-process technology to produce State-5 gasoline.

Daqing No 2 CDU/VDU Deep Cut Technology Application

After adopting Deep Cut technology from KBC, the residue yield from Daqing’s

CDU/VDU was reduced to below 34wt%, and the VGO yield was increased by 4wt%. Moreover, the feedstock balance between refinery processing units was shifted, providing a better balance with RFCC and Delayed Coker capacities. Deep Cut technology has helped the refinery make full use of unit capacities to reduce processing costs and increase product output. Read More ›

Microscopic Examination and Diagnostic Technology in Catalytic Cracking

The new technology to diagnose FCC Operation, FCC Catalyst Micrograph observation, has been developed. For more than ten years the authors have collected more than 2000 catalyst samples (fresh, spent, regenerated, fine, etc) from more than 60 FCC units at various operation conditions, through handing, observing and photographing a catalyst micrograph atlas has been established. The observation and comparison of catalyst shape, color, particle size distribution, fine in slurry, and fine concentration configuration in flue gas expender, is helpful for FCC unit troubleshooting. Until now this technology has helped more than 10 FCC units to identify the problems and optimise the operation. Read More ›

Economic Turmoil – Catalytic Ways to Minimise on Feedstock Costs While Pushing the Added Value on Transportation Fuels

FCCUs aim at processing more and heavier residues, Albemarle delivers catalytic solutions to meet that challenge. Coral SMR enables processing max resid with superior coke selectivity; BCMT-500 additive enables deeper conversion of the bottoms of the barrel; BCMT-CaFe additive developed for stronger diffusion limited operations, such as Ca and Fe poisoning.
